P.S. This problem is somehow quite similar to Worked Example 1 but I shall show another method of solving this problem. That is by using proportion.

(a) Let y g = the weight of 150 such similar books

150 : 35 = y : 75

           =

   y                                                                                       = x 75                                                                                                    = 321

(b) Let x books = no. of books when the pile of books weighs 1 kg

x : 35 = 675 g : 75 g

      =

x                                                                                          = x 35

= 315

(a)

5 pipes can fill up a tank with a capacity of 8500 litres with water in 5 minutes.

1 pipe can fill up a tank with a capacity of (8500/5 = 1700) litres with water in 5 minutes.

1 pipe can fill up a tank with a capacity of (1700/5 = 340) litres with water in 1 minute.

1 pipe can fill up a tank with a capacity of (340 x 4 = 1360) litres with water in 4 minutes.

(1 x 7 = 7) pipes can fill up a tank with a capacity of 9520 litres with water in 4 minutes.

Ans: 7 pipes

(b)

1 pipe can fill up a tank with a capacity of 340 litres with water in 1 minute.

49 pipes can fill up a tank with a capacity of (340 x 49 = 16660) litres with water in 1 minute.

49 pipes can fill up a tank with a capacity of 33 320 litres with water in (1 x 2 = 2) minutes.

Ans: 2 minutes
