What is Percentage?

Percentage is a fraction whose denominator is 100.

E.g. = 25%

The symbol % is used to express a percentage.

Section (I) : Converting fractions to percentage.

E.g. of the pupils participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition. How many percent of the whole class participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition?

Method (A)

Change the denominator into 100.

Percent of whole class who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition =

= 48%

 

Method (B)

Multiply the faction by 100%. (More efficient!)

Percent of whole class who participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition =  x 100%                                        = 48%

Section (II): Converting percentage to fractions.
Divide the percentage by 100.

E.g. of the pupils participated in the Projects’ Day. What fraction of the whole class participated in the Projects’ Day?

Fraction of the class which participated in the Projects’ Day  = / 100

= x

Section (III): Converting decimals into percentage.
Multiply the decimal by 100%.

E.g. 0.35 of the teachers participated in the Teachers’ Debate. What percentage of the teachers participated in the Teachers’ Debate?

Percentage of the teachers who participated in the Teachers’ Debate

= 0.35 x 100%

= 35%

E.g. Convert into decimal.

  = x 100%

            = 61.25 x 100%

            = 0.6125
